Egmont Network of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) Meetings, January 2026: Sharing Strategic Intelligence on Hubs of Illicit Trade and Related Global Risks

David M. Luna attended, and participated at, the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units meetings of Working and Regional Groups, 26-30 January 2026, Arusha, Tanzania.

Our George Mason University (GMU) team briefed on our Hubs of Illicit Trade (HIT) project, and invited to attend numerous regional groups’ working sessions.

The Egmont Group recognizes that financial intelligence sharing is paramount and has become the cornerstone of international efforts to counter money laundering, terrorist financing, and associated predicate offences.

International standards require financial intelligence units (FIUs) to exchange information and engage in international cooperation.

Hubs of Illicit Trade (HIT) Project: Illicit trade and associated criminal activities are estimated to account for between 8 and 15 per cent of global GDP (OECD). A significant proportion of the trafficking in illicit goods and contraband can be traced to a small number of supply routes, safe haven hubs that specialize in illegal manufacturing, diversion, and/or cross-border smuggling while also serving as money laundering centers.
